‘Twas the night before Valentine’s Day when all through the store all the people were bustling… they needed to get more!
More salsa, more hot sauce even mixes and jellies. A spicy or sweet taste for everyone’s belly.
The hearts in the window were hung there with care.
In hopes that Cupid would soon be there;
The children were playing instead of in beds,
While visions of prickly pear danced in their heads;
When out in the town there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my chair to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
As the moon came to rest it gave off a warm glow.
Gave a lustre of mid-day to objects below,
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
but our Eight Pistolero’s and our roper of steer’s
The gang’s team leader was lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must do the trick.
So he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;
“Now, people! now, people now, people I say
Our Wild West Stunt Show is clearly on its way!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
There’s high falls & low falls and entertainment for all!”
So up to the roof-top the pistoleros flew
With the sack full of money and gun toten too.
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The stamping and stomping of each little boot.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the ladder St. Valentine’s came with a bound.
He was dressed all in denim, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;
A sack full of sauces he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.
His eyes — how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath;
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly.
He was chubby and plump, and took a look at my shelf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the shelves; then turned with a jerk,
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the ladder he rose;
He sprang to his wagon, to his team gave a whistle,
And they rode out of sight like the down of a missile….”oh, my gosh!! Save the women and children : )”
I heard him exclaim, as he rode out of sight,
“Happy Valentine’s to all, and to all a good-night.”
** We had fun tonight. Did a bit of sampling of a Pure Jalapeno puree from Southwest Specialty foods and Lil’ Sassy’s – Salsa for Wimps. And, Mo says, “That’s doggone tasty!”
Thanks Mo for coming in tonight!
