New Store Window Display. Developing New Sauces. Helping to sponsor the Relight the Night Event @ the Kontiki!

Lots of stuff happening this month! It’s a bit exciting, really. I’ve updated the store window. I’ve started to develop my own sauces for the business and there’s an exciting upcoming event at the Kontiki called Relight the Night.

Since there are so many sauces out there, I need to be unique and creative. I’m taking a poll. What do you feel is missing from the sauces that are out there? What would you like so see on the market these days? I think getting public opinion would be beneficial! Post your comments. I’d love to hear from you.

I’m posting some photos here so have a look see. Comments, suggestions and insight are always welcome!

I’ll keep you updated on my progress.

‘Twas the Night Before Valentine’s Day!

February 14th, 2010

‘Twas the night before Valentine’s Day when all through the store all the people were bustling… they needed to get more!

More salsa, more hot sauce even mixes and jellies. A spicy or sweet taste for everyone’s belly.

The hearts in the window were hung there with care.

In hopes that Cupid would soon be there;

The children were playing instead of in beds,

While visions of prickly pear danced in their heads;

When out in the town there arose such a clatter,

I sprang from my chair to see what was the matter.

Away to the window I flew like a flash,

Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

As the moon came to rest it gave off a warm glow.

Gave a lustre of mid-day to objects below,

When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,

but our Eight Pistolero’s and our roper of steer’s

The gang’s team leader was lively and quick,

I knew in a moment it must do the trick.

So he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;

“Now, people! now, people now, people I say

Our Wild West Stunt Show is clearly on its way!

To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!

There’s high falls & low falls and entertainment for all!”

So up to the roof-top the pistoleros flew
With the sack full of money and gun toten too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof

The stamping and stomping of each little boot.

As I drew in my head, and was turning around,

Down the ladder St. Valentine’s came with a bound.

He was dressed all in denim, from his head to his foot,

And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;

A sack full of sauces he had flung on his back,

And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.

His eyes — how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!

His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!

His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,

And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,

And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath;

He had a broad face and a little round belly,

That shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly.

He was chubby and plump, and took a look at my shelf,

And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;

A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,

Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,

And filled all the shelves; then turned with a jerk,

And laying his finger aside of his nose,

And giving a nod, up the ladder he rose;

He sprang to his wagon, to his team gave a whistle,

And they rode out of sight like the down of a missile….”oh, my gosh!! Save the women and children : )”

I heard him exclaim, as he rode out of sight,

“Happy Valentine’s to all, and to all a good-night.”

** We had fun tonight. Did a bit of sampling of a Pure Jalapeno puree from Southwest Specialty foods and Lil’ Sassy’s – Salsa for Wimps. And, Mo says, “That’s doggone tasty!”
Thanks Mo for coming in tonight!

“The Native American flute has achieved some measure of fame for its distinctive sound, used in a variety of New Age and world music recordings. The instrument was originally very personal; its music was played without accompaniment in courtship, healing, meditation, and spiritual rituals. Now it is played solo or along with other instruments or vocals both in Native American music and in other styles. It is one of 3 original instruments found in most indigenous cultures along with the drum and rattle, and early flutes were made of bone, such as eagle bone.” (cited from www.rainbowflutes.com)

Hopefully, in months to come, my harvest will be a bit bigger. I plan to get and carry Dave Dewitt’s Complete Guide to Peppers. He’s the guru of peppers! Also, there have been requests about getting Ghost Pepper/Jolokia seeds or more products. So, I’ll be researching for a good source for those items. Check back with us. Or, better yet, shoot us an email!

New to the store, fresh from a Tucson Estate are (3) Navajo Kachina Dolls. Will be uploading photos soon.

CALABACITAS (Squash Casserole)

October 30th, 2009

Okay, here’s a recipe for the Midwestern folks…something to do with the mounds of zucchini or squash you get!….

It’s called CALABACITAS or Squash Casserole; It’s delicious : )

Squash is native to the Americas and Pueblo Indians grew many different varieties and even used the squash blossoms.  This recipe couples two of the most important of Indian foods, corn and squash, with tomatoes, onions, and chile to make a truly memorable side dish.

2 TB butter

1 small yellow onion, chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 green bell pepper, seeded and chopped

2 medium yellow crookneck squash

2 Indian squash or zucchini

1 ripe, red tomato, peeled and chopped

1-1/2 cups corn kernels, cut off the cob or frozen

1 mild, long green chile, roasted, peeled, seeded, and chopped

1/4 tsp. dried oregano, crushed

1/2 tsp ground cumin

1/4 tsp freshly ground black pepper

Salt to taste

1 cup grated Cheddar cheese

Preheat oven to 325 degrees.  Melt the butter in a heavy skillet and saute’ the onion, garlic, and bell pepper over medium heat for 4 to 5 minutes.  Add the tomatoes, corn, chile, salt, oregano, cumin, and black pepper and stir.

Spoon the squash-corn mixture into a lightly greased baking glass dish; sprinkle the cheese on top and bake in a 325 degree overn for 30 minutes.

Serves 4 to 6.

Heat level:  Mild

I actually substituted (2) of our rogue yellow & green peppers for the zucchini in this recipe.  I didn’t have my “eyes” on when I was reading the recipe and I thought it was (2) of either  zucchini or the yellow crookneck squash.  No matter, it worked and tasted just as good.  Also, for me, the vegetables turned out al dente.  I thought they maybe should have been softer.  But, the family reviews came in and they LOVED IT!!  I suppose more of the vitamins stayed in as well.  It’s just so pretty too, very colorful.  Great addition to any meat entree.  It can also be a meal in itself.  It’s filling.  Please review the photos below.  Make comments or email me with questions.
